Info

Telling the radical history of the River Lea, the Undercurrent Digital Archive contains stories of collective action, play and liberation along the river from Luton to East London.

From neolithic beginnings to punk gigs and rave collectives, the River Lea has been a constant source of buoyancy for Luton and beyond. The journey of Undercurrent explores the connected narratives of community-led social justice movements and the ecology connected to the River Lea.

These oral histories tell the stories of those connected to the River Lea and the communities that have gathered at its banks. From Luton’s original party people, to civil rights movements and groups protecting natural habitats, the significance of the Lea’s social history cannot be denied.

The Undercurrent digital archives highlight the role of the Exodus Collective and the music subcultures formed from the lived experiences of people around the River Lea.
