For Lutonians who want to connect with their local landscapes.

Info

Take a quick trip into the woods and explore what ancient wonders await.

Join artist, Matthew Rosier on a guided visit to Bramingham Wood, an ancient woodland on the edge of Marsh Farm.

Participants will be immersed in this ancient wooded landscape, and have a demonstration of coppicing – where the branches of trees are chopped off periodically to supply wood, and to keep the woods healthy and full of life. Coppicing is a technique that has been used by humans in the area for centuries, and Woodland Trust’s Matthew George, manager at Bramingham Wood will deliver a demonstration.

During the walk and at the end, participants will be encouraged to choose branches, sticks, or other materials that have been gathered by the coppicing team at Bramingham, or that they have found themselves. These will become part of a collection of materials that will inspire the Luton Henge.

At the end of the walk, the participants will gather at Marsh Farm Library to chat with artist, Matthew Rosier and Matthew George of the Woodland Trust. The discussion will highlight the role of woods like these in the lives of the ancestors of the landscape, and how such woods could be used in the construction of the Luton Henge.

This walk is part of artist Matthew Rosier’s ‘Luton Henge’ project: a new community monument made from the Chilterns landscape, inspired by its ancient sites and stories. Opening in Summer 2025, it’ll serve as a platform for community events and performances, celebrating the culture of Luton today.
