Roti Cloths

Over 500 children from Beech Hill Primary School created highly decorative roti cloths with local artist Shabeena Parveen.

The project connected the different generations of families in Bury Park, an area of Luton that is predominantly built up of residents of a South Asian background. Shabeena used traditional Kashmiri textile techniques to create colourful repeating patterns, with every child creating their own design.

A celebration event was then held at the school to share the roti cloths with their families and the wider community.

Talking about the project, Shabeena Parveen said “For me, it is important to project an idea that is relatable and connects inter-generational families, encouraging them to open up a wider discussion on Kashmiri heritage, arts and culture. I hope to expand my practice by connecting to many groups, artists and organisations to enlighten them with the knowledge and creativity of Kashmiri arts and culture.”
